Shutter, a Must Watch

Mon Jul 13, 2009, 11:08 AM
  • Mood: Approval
  • Listening to: Globus - "Orchads of Mines"
  • Watching: Charmed -.-
Alrighty then, prepare yourselves for a nice surprise.

"Shutter", Thailand, 2004

I just have one thing to say about this movie.

FUCKING. AMAZING.

Seriously, the trailer was more than right. "All you could ask for in a horror movie", and much more. It was intense, it was scary as hell, it kept you begging for more, it was a horror movie.
Although the plot was only revealed more to the end, like in "The Unborn", you actually have something to work with in the beginning; the run over. And the twist in the story is very well conceived.
It has amazingly done parts ( like the photo shoot where the lights go on and off ), the actors were simply amazing, they knew how to show us emotion; love, terror, anger - everything was portraited in an amazing way. I never actually thought asian actors were that good.
The ghost ( Megumi Takami, if the name doesn't fail me ) was perfect for the role. She really did have the quiet and shy face and stook to the character throughout the whole story. And damn, when she wanted to be scary, she could be scary. Very very scary.
The final part was surprising really, although some of you might actually understand it before it appears ( I did at least ), but you really have to pay attention to everything, otherwise you won't get the key in this.
The shooting was very well done, it was very dark and gave you a feeling that something's not right the whole way.
Thank God, it wasn't boring, you're strapped to your seat from beginning to end, and honestly, you can get slightly scared of your house for a while. You never know really. xD

So, my saying is: watch the god damn movie, it's the best I've seen in a long while.

"Shutter", US, 2008

Wow. Huge disappointment.

I hope the executive producers ( that actually did "The Grudge" and "The Ring" ) aren't that satisfied with the result, because it wasn't even close as good as the original.
The shooting was too bright, too...cheery if you get what I mean. You watch a horror movie because you wanna get scared shitless, not because you want it to feel safe, comfortable. That's not the point.
Also, this remake was more focused in scaring you than tell an actual story ( although some scenes didn't even make you flinch ). Some parts are very shortened, and others you were better off not changing anything. Like the fact the girl lived alone in this remake. I believe it gave more of an impact when her mother was there. Oh, and talk about hiding facts you'd like to know. Yeah, 'cause in this version you totally know how the girl ended up in a chair like that, and what all those bottles mean. At least in the Thai movie, someone explained everything at the funeral.
They remade the scenes where the friends die, to make them more...horrid. And to that I give them cheers, because they were well done. But other than that, nothing too amazing.
When they reveal the twist, if you watched the original movie, again, you feel like they failed something. The original movie took a lot of how their relationship started into count. They gave us some minutes of something more soft, more beautiful to look at. Seeing Tun and Takami together was really nice, and made you feel better. In the 2008 version, you just see a little bit, I mean, you don't even know how they got together. Ben taking a group photo where the girl is in one scene, they're dating in the next. Makes a whole lot of sense mates.
My favourite part. This is a horror movie. Why, in bloody hell, isn't the girl scary?! She's just...normal, she causes no impact ( not even when she undresses ), she doesn't make you jump a bit off your seat and beg her to stay back or get out of the screen. In the beginning I told myself she'd look scarier as the movie progressed. Hell, was I wrong.
Buuuuuut, the final part was very well done. The actor showed perfect paranoia, obsession and fear. That part I really did like, but again, it doesn't make the rest good enough.

So I say: Watch the first movie, then give it a rest. Don't bother watching the US version, it's just...not worth it.

So yeah, scratching that off mah list. : )

I've already watched "The Haunting in Connecticut", but it wasn't in the best conditions, so I'm watching it again before giving a nice opinion. 8D

Bye!!

Hm, I see, but I'll probably have to politely refuse the kind offer.

I have a lot of art trades / requests / collabs to do, and taking in consideration I'm a very slow worker, I wouldn't be very active. I'd take a lot of time to finally get the chance to work with you and the comic would just equal even more stress on my shoulders, and that wouldn't be fair either to you or to me.

Also, I might say I'll commit to it and then not work as promise. A problem I'm trying to fix, but still very rusty. Again, not fair to you. ^^;

However, if you ever need some ideas, maybe general opinions, or anything else, I'll be more than glad to help. After all, we're a small organization, and we'll help each other out. x3

I hope there are no hard feelings though. ( :

no that's fine, i feel your pain. I have a lot of work to do too...but not art trades and stuff like that. and ya, i know it wouldn't be too fair if you help, but is too busy to do anything so ya...that wouldn't to to fair. well, at least i can get ideas from you! i'll tell darky about the news.
